Di Maio on the case of Enrico “Chico” Forti: the Foreign Ministry is closely monitoring the case

Minister Di Maio is closely monitoring the case of Italian citizen Enrico “Chico” Forti, who was arrested by the United States Authorities in 1998 and sentenced to life in prison in 2000 by a Florida Court under the charges of first-degree murder.

Over these years, the Italian citizen was able to count on the continuous assistance from the Italian Consular authorities. In 2016, we succeeded to have him transferred to a penitentiary near Miami, more easily accessible to the personnel of the Consulate General. The Italian Embassy and Consulate are in constant contact with Mr Forti and his lawyers and he is periodically visited in prison to verify his health and detention conditions. As for the judicial aspects, once the sentence became final in 2010 after all the appeals lodged were rejected, the objective has become to obtain that the U.S. Authorities make a judicial review of the trial or, alternatively, give Mr Forti the possibility of serving his sentence in Italy, his Country of origin, and closer to his relations.
