Ministry of Foreign Affairs: the Mediterranean, satisfaction with the new EU operation

The Ministry of Foreign Affairs welcomes the decision taken today by the Council of the European Union to launch the new European operation in the Mediterranean, called EUNAVFOR MED IRINI. Operation Irini will replace Operation Sophia, which expires on 31 March. Its main task the implementation of the UN arms embargo on Libya, wherever they come from, using air, satellite and maritime means.

Operation Irini – which does not provide for ports of disembarkation in Italy in the event of sea rescues – is therefore primarily called upon to support international efforts in support of a lasting and balanced solution to the conflict in Libya. The Operational Command will be located in Rome, and the Operation Commander will be the Italian Navy’s Division Admiral Fabio Agostini.

The European Union is thus taking a concrete step in support of the Berlin process and a political solution to the Libyan conflict. It is a crucial result, to which Minister Di Maio has made a substantial contribution from the outset in his continuous contacts with his European counterparts.
