Visit to Germany by Undersecretary Merlo

The visit of the Undersecretary with delegation for Italians abroad, Ricardo Merlo, in Germany, began. In Saarbrucken, Merlo had a meeting with the exponents of the local Com.It.Es. which represents a community of over 25,000 Italians. The Undersecretary then met the Minister President of Saarland, Tobias Hans, the Minister for Europe Peter Strubell and the Head of the Chancellery of the Land, Enric Aitel.

The representatives of the local government reported to the Undersecretary words of great appreciation for the historical role of Italians in Saarland. The discussion then focused on how best to ensure consular protection for our fellow countrymen. Minister Hans assured the local authorities of the utmost willingness to provide the necessary cooperation in this regard.

With Hans, Mr Merlo also discussed the impact of the pandemic in Europe and the measures taken, at continental level, also to respond to the economic crisis. The two interlocutors agreed on the fundamental role of the European Union, the single currency and the supranational dimension in the post-pandemic period. “In the majority of the Italian government – the Undersecretary explained – a debate is underway on the financial instruments to be used, but certainly, thanks to the European Union, the continent and the countries most affected will be able to come out of this crisis”.
