Execution of Iranian journalist Ruhollah Zam

Italy unreservedly condemns the execution of the Iranian journalist Ruhollah Zam, which took place on 12 December 2020.

Capital punishment is an inhumane, cruel and degrading treatment and can be accepted under no circumstances.

Italy reiterates its commitment to the gradual abolition of capital punishment and launches a strong appeal to Iran to apply a moratorium on death penalty.

Italy believes that death penalty has no value as a deterrent, in terms of the fight against crime, and that its abolition will contribute to strengthening respect of human dignity, democratic values, and human rights.
