Italy welcomes the outcome of the vote in the Libyan Political Dialogue Forum

Italy welcomes the outcome of the vote with which today, in Geneva, the 75 delegates of the Libyan Political Dialogue Forum (LPDF) appointed the President, the two Vice Presidents of the Presidential Council and the Prime Minister. We congratulate the candidates elected at the end of a process led by the Libyans, for the Libyans.
The designation of unitary an inclusive transitional executive authoritiy is an important step on the path of stabilization and institutional consolidation of Libya, in view of the elections scheduled for 24 December 2021.
We invite all Libyan and international actors to continue to work, under the aegis of the United Nations and in the primary interest of the Libyan people, to preserve the unity and sovereignty of Libya and promote the country’s prosperity. We trust that the progress achieved in the LPDF can contribute to the advancement of cooperation between all Libyan stakeholders in the interconnected sectors of security, economy and respect for international humanitarian law in the framework of the Berlin Process, also in the perspective of national reconciliation.
With the establishment of a Presidential Council and, in the perspective of a Government of National Unity, for which we call for full inclusiveness, a new political phase begins, which is also crucial for the full implementation of the ceasefire agreement of 23 October 2020 and the withdrawal from the country of all foreign fighters and mercenaries.
In this crucial step for the future of Libya, Italy remains alongside the Libyan people.
In reiterating its support for the United Nations Support Mission in Libya (UNSMIL), Italy thanks the interim Special Representative for Libya of the UN Secretary General, Stephanie Williams, and confirms its full availability to collaborate with her successor, Jan Kubis.
