Myanmar Ambassador summoned to the Foreign Ministry

The Ambassador of the Union of Myanmar in Italy, H.E. Ms. Hmway Khyne, has been summoned to the Foreign Ministry today to receive the request that the military authorities immediately cease all violent repression of the democratic protests underway in the country. Italy has expressed its full solidarity to all those who are peacefully demonstrating to defend the civilian institutions and the democratic future of their country.

Italy has reiterated its strong condemnation of the military coup of 1 February and its request for the immediate release of State Counsellor Aung San Suu Kyi, arbitrarily detained in solitary confinement, and all those arrested in connection with the coup.

The Foreign Ministry has also emphasised the illegitimacy of the Myanmar military’s decision to cancel the November elections. The Ambassador has been reminded that alleged electoral fraud must be dealt with in accordance with established procedures and that the will of the people of Myanmar must be respected.
