Note of the Foreign Ministry – Di Maio – Blinken phone talks (Rome, January 19, 2022)

Minister for Foreign Affairs and International Cooperation Luigi Di Maio pursues talks on Russia-Ukraine agenda. In the latter part of today the Minister was on the phone to US Secretary of State Antony Blinken, welcoming mutual exchanges between the two countries – as testified by both governments’ shared pursuit of dialogue with Moscow, albeit pursuant to Euro-Atlantic values and principles.

In the wake of last week’s NATO-Russia Council meetings, Mr Di Maio emphasised Italy’s belief in the need to further efforts towards establishing a political dialogue with Moscow, to which effect he underscored the need to establish coordination among NATO members with a view to reaching a unified, balanced and proportionate response, discouraging further tensions between Russia and the Ukraine.

Minister Di Maio went on to express hopes that continuing coordination on the Russia-Ukraine agenda should also extend to the United States and the European Union.
