The Minister of Foreign Affairs and International Cooperation, Luigi Di Maio, met today at the Farnesina with Abdallah Bou Habib, Minister of Foreign Affairs and Emigrants of the Republic of Lebanon, on visit in Rome together with the President of the Republic of Lebanon, Michel Aoun.

Firstly, the two Ministers discussed the major issues of the international agenda, starting from the war in Ukraine. Minister Di Maio expressed his appreciation of the clear stance taken by Lebanon – one of the first countries of the Middle East to condemn the Russian Federation’s attack on Ukraine – and of its vote in favour of the United Nations General Assembly resolution condemning Russia. Mr Di Maio also reasserted the Italian Government’s deep concern for the humanitarian situation and for the growing number of casualties across all population groups. “It is paramount to continue to condemn this aggression together and to support all efforts in favour of peace”, he added.

The two Ministers then addressed regional issues and reviewed the main aspects of the bilateral relations. Minister Di Maio assured Minister Bou Habib that Italy considers Lebanon strategically important for the stability of the Mediterranean region and of the Middle East and stressed Italy’s solid commitment in providing assistance to the most vulnerable categories and in favour of Lebanon’s socio-economic recovery, through our Development Cooperation projects and through Italy’s contribution to the security of Lebanon and of the Region, via our qualified participation in UNIFIL and the bilateral mission for the training of Lebanese armed forces and security forces (MIBIL).
