The Secretary-General of the Farnesina, Ambassador Ettore Francesco Sequi, met today with his Cypriot counterpart, Ambassador Kornelios Korneliou, to discuss major bilateral and European issues, as well as international affairs of common interest.
Ambassador Sequi reasserted how important Italy considers its excellent relations with Cyprus, given their Mediterranean calling. He said he hopes cooperation between the two countries will be further consolidated, including within the framework of the European Union, with specific reference to migration-related issues and economic governance.
Regarding the war in Ukraine, the two Secretary-Generals reasserted the firm condemnation of Russia’s aggression and highlighted the urgent need to cease hostilities as soon as possible in order to alleviate the suffering of the Ukrainian people. They also stressed their shared support of Ukraine’s territorial integrity, sovereignty, independence and freedom, and of the ongoing talks between Kyiv and Moscow.
Ambassador Sequi and Ambassador Korneliou also had a fruitful exchange of views on the situation in the Eastern Mediterranean. In particular, Mr Sequi confirmed Italy’s commitment in favour of an inclusive dialogue among all stakeholders, knowing that stability in the region is a shared priority, even to ensure Europe’s energy security.
