Ambassador Riccardo Guariglia takes office today as Secretary General of the Italian Ministry of Foreign Affairs.
Guariglia entered the diplomatic career in 1985 and served his first assignments abroad in Cairo, Brussels, Brasilia and at the Permanent Representation to NATO. He was Head of the Diplomatic Protocol of the Republic and Head of Cabinet of the pro-tempore Minister of Foreign Affairs in 2018 and 2019.
Ambassador of Italy in Warsaw from 2011 to 2014, he most recently held the post of Ambassador of Italy in Madrid, also accredited to Andorra, from 2020 to 2023.
According to Italian Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of Foreign Affairs and International Cooperation, Antonio Tajani, “Ambassador Guariglia’s vast experience abroad and the important roles he has held at the Italian Ministry of Foreign Affairs, combined with his recognised managerial skills, are fundamental to authoritatively lead a complex administrative machine such as that of the Italian Ministry of Foreign Affairs, which I have the honour to direct. I am certain that these qualities will enable him to successfully carry out the mandate conferred upon him.”
