Telephone conversation between Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of Foreign Affairs and International Cooperation, Antonio Tajani, and Algerian Minister of Foreign Affairs Ahmed Attaf

On 25 August, Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of Foreign Affairs and International Cooperation, Antonio Tajani, had a friendly telephone conversation with Algeria’s Minister of Foreign Affairs and National Community Abroad, Ahmed Attaf.

The conversation focused on the delicate situation in Niger, which also sees Algiers at the forefront of regional mediation efforts.

Tajani reaffirmed the Italian Government’s constant commitment to the crisis in Niger, and expressed its strong support for a diplomatic solution to the crisis and for the work personally carried out by Minister Attaf in the region in recent hours. He also stressed the need to work with all regional partners to achieve a positive outcome in the short term, also in light of the latest developments.

Tajani and Attaf agreed to continue working in close coordination to achieve the common goal of fighting terrorism and ensuring stability in the Sahel region, issues that directly affect the security of the Mediterranean.

“The crisis in Niger and the instability in the Sahel will also be discussed in Toledo, on the occasion of the Informal Meeting of the Foreign Ministers of the European Union next week,” Tajani concluded, adding that he would “continue to discuss the issue and Italy’s leading role in the upcoming talks with key international partners”.
