In the wake of the contacts initiated with his main regional counterparts since the outbreak of hostilities between Israel and Hamas, Italian Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of Foreign Affairs and International Cooperation, Antonio Tajani, held telephone talks this afternoon with Jordanian Minister of Foreign Affairs, Ayman Al Safadi, and with Arab League Secretary General, Ahmed Aboul Gheit.
The focus of the conversations was the arrival in Egypt of the first shipment of Italian aid for the Palestinian population of the Gaza Strip, which will be delivered by the Italian Embassy in Cairo to the Egyptian Red Crescent for subsequent distribution.
“Our immediate priority is to guarantee the civilian population access to humanitarian aid and to work to alleviate their serious suffering”, the Deputy Prime Minister told his interlocutors, who expressed “great appreciation” for Italy’s contribution on the humanitarian front.
Finally, the parties agreed on the importance of avoiding a regional escalation of the conflict and working towards the creation of humanitarian corridors in Gaza.
