The situation in Gaza, the risk of regional escalation and the threats to free navigation in the Red Sea were the topics of the telephone conversation between the Italian Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of Foreign Affairs and International Cooperation, Antonio Tajani, and the Jordanian Minister of Foreign Affairs, Ayman Safadi.
“Jordan continues to be a strategic partner for Italy in the Middle East, especially in this delicate phase,” said Tajani. “We appreciate the balanced, consistent position that Amman is maintaining and we intend to maintain close coordination.”
During the phone call, the Italian side stressed that the only way for peace between Israelis and Palestinians is the two-state solution, the only one capable of providing a political perspective that can guarantee security and stability in the Middle East region.
“Italy is strongly concerned about the Houthi attacks in the Red Sea, which jeopardise the safety of shipping and, consequently, also the exports of our companies,” the Deputy Prime Minister commented, adding that “we are working to define a response at the European level”.
Tajani and Safadi also discussed the situation in Lebanon and the risk of a widening of the conflict, also following the latest developments. “Even as G7 Presidency, Italy remains committed to averting the risks of escalation and intends to remain at the forefront to facilitate coordination between those countries that play a key role at the international level.”
