Today, the Italian Council of Ministers approved a draft bill for the ratification and execution of the Host Agreement between the Unified Patent Court (UPC) and the Italian Republic.
The Italian Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of Foreign Affairs and International Cooperation, Antonio Tajani, pointed out that “with the rapid start of the ratification process of this agreement, we are taking another significant step forward to strengthen the protection of industrial property, which is fundamental for promoting the growth and productivity of our companies and the entire economic system.”
“With this Host Agreement, which is the first in Europe since the Court became operational, Italy considerably strengthens its cooperation with the UPC,” added Minister Tajani, “and is committed to ensuring that its offices on Italian soil can operate in the best possible conditions from a practical and legal point of view”.
The Host Agreement comes after the entry into force of UPC in June 2023 and the unanimous decision of the UPC Administrative Committee to establish a section of the central division of UPC in Milan. The Unified Patent Court is a supranational European patent litigation instrument, whose rulings will have to be recognised and enforced in all countries participating in the system.
