The Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of Foreign Affairs and International Cooperation, Hon. Antonio Tajani, had a telephone conversation today with the Iranian Foreign Minister, Hossein Amir-Abdollahian, to discuss the situation in the Middle East.
On this subject, the Deputy Prime Minister said: “I appealed to my Iranian colleague for moderation. We cannot risk escalation in such an extremely volatile phase. All regional actors must show responsibility. Italy remains in the front line, also as G7 Presidency, to prevent a widening of the conflict in the Middle East, as well as lower tension and facilitate dialogue. What we are experiencing is a decisive moment to return to a dynamic of peace in the region.”
Minister Tajani also urged his colleague to exert a moderating influence on Iran’s allies in the region, thus contributing to the start of a process that can ensure renewed security and stability in the region.
Today’s phone call is part of the government’s broader efforts to avoid a regionalisation of the ongoing conflict. In this regard, the commitment of Italian troops in the Lebanon as part of the UNIFIL mission continues, as does that of the Aspides mission to defend the freedom of trade of Italian ships and all Italian merchant traffic.
