Return to Italy of a disputed child

A child, who had been illegitimately taken away from his Italian mother and brought to Turkey, landed at Bergamo Airport over the weekend, thus bringing to an end a delicate affair that had arisen in 2020.

The Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of Foreign Affairs and International Cooperation, Hon. Antonio Tajani, said: “I am happy that the child has finally returned home”’ He thanked the Foreign Ministry’s officials for their work, emphasising the Italian government’s “constant commitment to the protection of our compatriots around the world”.

The affair – on which Prime Minister Meloni had also been personally involved on several occasions – has been followed from the very beginning with the utmost attention by the Izmir Consulate and the Italian Embassy in Ankara, in close coordination with the Foreign Ministry’s Unit for the Protection of Italians Abroad, which provided all necessary assistance to the mother and child, sensitising the local authorities to the importance of reaching a positive solution of the affair as soon as possible. The child’s return was made possible also thanks to the work of the Disputed Minors Task Force, chaired by the Foreign Ministry with the participation of officials from the Ministries of the Interior and Justice.
