Italian Ministry of Foreign Affairs and International Cooperation sets up the National and International Table for the Enhancement of Popular and Amateur Music

Italy’s Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of Foreign Affairs and International Cooperation Antonio Tajani has signed a Decree to set up the National and International Table for the Enhancement of Popular and Amateur Music.

“Italy has a tradition of bands, fanfares, choirs and folkloristic groups, a reminder that there is a strong attachment to popular cultural roots in the Country. This tradition has become a symbol of Italy in the world. For this reason, we have created a new instrument that will provide further protection and enhancement of Italian popular and amateur music in the world,” commented Tajani.

The Table will cooperate closely with the “Roots Tourism” project and will be part of the cultural diplomacy action carried out by the Italian Ministry of Foreign Affairs and its network abroad.

As delegated by Minister Tajani, the round table will be chaired by Antonio Corsi, advisor for the promotion of cultural and musical traditions of Italian communities abroad. The initiative aims to support and coordinate popular and amateur music activities in Italy and abroad to achieve the objectives of the NRRP programme “Roots Tourism”. It will benefit entities and associations devoted to popular and amateur music activities in the over 7,900 Italian municipalities, including about 4,600 music bands, 3,500 choral groups, 2,500 school choirs, 3,000 parish choirs and 750 folk groups.

These are fundamental social and cultural realities, which embody the history and traditions of local territories and play a role in educating the new generations by passing on national culture and identity.
