Minister Tajani’s mission to Switzerland to attend the High-Level Conference on Peace in Ukraine

The Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of Foreign Affairs and International Cooperation, Hon. Antonio Tajani, will be on a mission to Lucerne, Switzerland, today and tomorrow (15-16 June) to take part in the High-Level Conference on Peace in Ukraine.

The Conference, which takes place after four coordination meetings on the ten points of Ukrainian President Zelensky’s Peace Formula, aims to start a process to end the conflict with a path to peace based on international law and the UN Charter.

Hon. Tajani said: “As shown by the ongoing discussions at the G7 Summit in Apulia under the Prime Minister’s leadership, Italy has put Ukraine and its reconstruction at the centre of its G7 Presidency.” He recalled that Italy would host the next Ukraine Recovery Conference in 2025 in Rome. He added: “Together with our partners, we support Ukraine’s freedom, sovereignty, independence and territorial integrity, within its internationally recognised borders.”

Three thematic sessions on nuclear safety, food security and the release of prisoners of war are planned during the Conference. Italy continues to support the action of the IAEA and Director General Grossi to ensure the safety of Ukraine’s nuclear facilities, and the Zaporizhzhia plant, in particular. As maintained by Minister Tajani since the beginning of his mandate, and in the numerous meetings and contacts with DG Grossi, the Italian government condemns Russia’s control and militarisation of the Ukrainian nuclear plant and hopes that it will be fully secured.

The issue of food safety, which has been affected by the impact of Russian aggression on the production and export of agricultural products, is a key area of Italy’s foreign policy and cooperation, also in the framework of the Mattei Plan and the G7 Presidency. With specific reference to the repatriation of Ukrainian children and prisoners of war, Italy is an active member of the International Coalition for the Repatriation of Ukrainian Children.

Italy is at the forefront of humanitarian support for Ukraine and the reconstruction of the country. Bilateral assistance to Ukraine, net of military assistance and of our contribution to European assistance, amounts to more than EUR 2 billion. At the Ukraine Recovery Conference in Berlin on 11 June, Minister Tajani announced additional aid of EUR 140 million in grants and donations, and credit for works on energy infrastructure, railways, health, agriculture, recovery of Odessa’s cultural heritage, and humanitarian demining.
