Minister Tajani held a telephone conversation with the Foreign Ministers of Israel and Lebanon

The Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of Foreign Affairs and International Cooperation, Antonio Tajani, held telephone conversations with the Minister of Foreign Affairs of the State of Israel, Israel Katz, and the Minister of Foreign Affairs and Emigrants of the Lebanese Republic, Abdallah Bou Habib.

“To Minister Katz, I expressed the government’s profound condolences for the vile attack in Majdal Shams, which tragically took the lives of innocent young people. We condemn in the strongest terms the violence against civilians,” stated Minister Tajani.

“To Minister Bou Habib, I reaffirmed the Italian government’s commitment to supporting Lebanese institutions, whose stability is key for the entire region. We are dedicated to supporting the Lebanese Armed Forces (LAF) on both bilateral and multilateral levels, promoting an international aid programme that can enable their strengthening and better equipment. Bou Habib expressed his government’s appreciation for the steps taken by the Italian government, including within the European context, for a new approach towards Syria.”

“Stopping the spiral of violence is possible and must be done now. A new war must be absolutely avoided. I urged Ministers Katz and Bou Habib to heed Italy’s call for an immediate ceasefire and de-escalation across the region. Continuing and expanding the conflict benefits no one,” the Minister emphasised, reiterating that “Italy fully supports any mediation initiative that can foster dialogue between the parties.”

“Italy’s commitment to peace and regional stability continues. Preserving Lebanon’s stability is fundamental. It is increasingly crucial, as discussed with both Ministers, to fully respect Resolution 1701. I also requested respect and protection for the UN mission personnel, which includes over 1,000 Italian soldiers,” added Minister Tajani.
