Minister Tajani chairs G7 Foreign Ministers’ Meeting on the situation in the Middle East

Italy’s Minister of Foreign Affairs and International Cooperation Antonio Tajani today chaired a videoconference G7 Foreign Ministers’ Meeting on the situation in the Middle East, organised in the framework of Italy’s G7 Presidency.

“Together with our partners, we expressed strong concern over recent events that threaten to result in a regionalisation of the crisis, starting with Lebanon,” said Tajani.

“We invite all parties concerned to desist from any initiative that could stand in the way of dialogue and moderation and encourage a new escalation.”

“Confirming our support for the Biden Plan, we reaffirmed our belief that a successful end to the ceasefire negotiations in Gaza and the release of hostages should be a priority. We also confirmed our commitment to increase humanitarian support to the people of the Strip, including in the context of the Food for Gaza initiative,” Tajani continued.

Minister Tajani and his colleagues recalled the importance of complying with UN Security Council Resolution 1701 for the management of the military presence on the border between Lebanon and Israel.

The Foreign Ministers shared information on Lebanon and agreed on the need to maintain a steady operational liaison in the region, as well as political coordination.
