Upon instructions of the Deputy Prime Minister, Antonio Tajani, the Undersecretary of State for Foreign Affairs and International Cooperation, Maria Tripodi, took part in the ceremony to inaugurate the public area “Piazzale dell’Unione Europea” in the Municipality of Fiumicino, organised to celebrate the anniversary of the awarding of the Nobel Peace Prize to the EU in 2012.
In a historical phase in which, after decades, war has returned to Europe, the Undersecretary reaffirmed the EU’s commitment to peace, democracy and respect for human rights.
She said: “Today’s inauguration bears witness to this awareness, the significance of which is also a commitment to continue to face the challenges ahead with determination and courage.”
The ceremony, opened by Fiumicino’s Mayor Mario Baccini, was held in the presence of the Ambassadors of Latvia, Lithuania, Poland, the Czech Republic and Romania. The ceremony was also attended by the Vice-President of the European Parliament, Antonella Sberna; the Vice-President of the Constitutional Court, Giulio Prospeterri; the Vice President of the Lazio Region, Roberta Angelilli; and the Prefect Lamberto Giannini.
