The Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of Foreign Affairs and International Cooperation, Antonio Tajani, will chair a summit on Syria, in the Quintet format, today at Villa Madama, starting at 6 p.m. The gathering is expected to be attended by the US Secretary of State, Antony Blinken, the United Kingdom’s Secretary of State, David Lammy, the High Representative for Foreign Affairs and Security Policy of the European Union, Kaja Kallas, and senior officials from France and Germany.
The meeting was also promoted by Minister Tajani in view of his mission to Syria, scheduled for tomorrow. The aim of the summit is to take stock of the situation in the country one month after the fall of the Assad regime and to strengthen coordination between the countries of the Quintet to promote a peaceful and inclusive transition.
Among the points under discussion will be the work of the Transitional Government and the challenges ahead of the “National Dialogue Conference” announced by the de facto Syrian authorities, as well as the country’s security issues and how to ensure the integration of all components of Syrian society. On the table of this evening’s Quintet meeting there will also be the issue of socio-economic support to Syria and the question of how to accompany the return of refugees to the country.
