This evening, another Palestinian child arrived at Fiumicino Airport on a flight from Cairo, as part of the operation that, on 13 February, enabled Italy to welcome fourteen young cancer patients from Gaza along with their families.
The child’s health conditions had prevented their transfer with the rest of the group last week. However, after receiving a positive medical assessment from doctors at the Italian Hospital Umberto I in Cairo, the journey could now proceed. Accompanied by a doctor from the Civil Protection Department, the young patient will receive treatment at the Meyer Hospital in Florence.
With this latest arrival, the number of patients transferred from Gaza to Italy has reached 89, reaffirming Italy’s commitment to humanitarian assistance and its support for peace in the Middle East.
This initiative is part of the broader “Food for Gaza” programme, through which Italy has been at the forefront of humanitarian efforts since the early stages of the Middle East crisis. During the latest Food for Gaza task force meeting, chaired at the Farnesina on 22 January by Minister Tajani, it was decided to expand the scope of the initiative to include the involvement of Italian university hospitals, starting with the healthcare sector. Special priority has been given to the medical evacuation of sick children from Gaza, along with their families, to receive treatment in Italy.
Italy remains committed to expanding its focus towards the reconstruction of Gaza, starting with the healthcare sector, and is exploring additional collaboration opportunities with key medical institutions in the country.
