G20 Foreign Ministers’ Meeting in Johannesburg under South African Presidency

The first G20 Foreign Ministers’ Meeting under the South African Presidency, which began on 1 December, concluded today in Johannesburg. On behalf of Minister Tajani, Undersecretary Maria Tripodi represented Italy at the event.

On 20 February, discussions focused on the international geopolitical situation. Undersecretary Tripodi stressed that, amid an increasingly uncertain global landscape marked by ongoing armed conflicts, the G20 must uphold the territorial integrity and sovereignty of all states while promoting human rights and fundamental freedoms. Reaffirming Italy’s strong condemnation of Russia’s aggression against Ukraine, Tripodi emphasised the need to work towards a comprehensive, just, and lasting peace. She also announced that Italy will host the Ukraine Reconstruction Conference in July 2025.

Regarding the Middle East, Tripodi reiterated Italy’s commitment to securing a ceasefire in Gaza and supporting long-term reconstruction efforts. She reaffirmed Italy’s support for a sustainable peace based on the “two peoples, two states” vision. Italy’s humanitarian assistance was also highlighted, particularly through the “Food for Gaza” initiative and the treatment of Palestinian children in Italian hospitals. Africa remains a top priority for Italy, Tripodi stated, pointing to the Mattei Plan and various initiatives in food security and energy transition. She also expressed Italy’s deep concern over the severe crises in Sudan and the Democratic Republic of the Congo.

During today’s closing session, which focused on the priorities of the South African G20 Presidency, Tripodi underlined the need for global cooperation in tackling pressing challenges and reaffirmed Italy’s commitment to achieving the UN Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs). She also confirmed Italy’s dedication to combating climate change, pollution, biodiversity loss, and food insecurity through key initiatives such as the Italian Climate Fund, the Adaptation Acceleration Hub, and the Apulia Food Systems Initiative, both launched during Italy’s G7 Presidency. Finally, Tripodi highlighted Italy’s efforts to reduce digital inequalities, referencing the Artificial Intelligence Hub for Sustainable Development, which aims to support technological innovation in Africa.
