During an institutional mission to Honduras, Undersecretary for Foreign Affairs Giorgio Silli and Deputy Minister of Foreign Affairs Gerardo Torres Zelaya signed the memorandum establishing the Political Dialogue Mechanism between Italy and Honduras.
In the first session of the Dialogue, held in Tegucigalpa, the following topics were discussed: bilateral relations, “legal diplomacy” initiatives in the fight against organised crime and corruption within the “Falcone e Borsellino” regional programme, cooperation on candidacies, regional and multilateral issues (in particular, EU-Latin America and Caribbean relations), and the role of the UN in the resolution of current global crises and conflicts.
Subsequently, Silli travelled to San Pedro Sula for meetings with Mayor Roberto Contreras Mendoza, the local business community and the other Deputy Minister of Foreign Affairs, Antonio Garcia. On the Island of Roatan, he instead met with the Mayor, Ron McNab, the resident Italian community, and the Minister of Tourism, Yadira Gomez, with whom opportunities for collaboration in the sector were explored.
” We are determined to relaunch wide-ranging bilateral relations with Honduras, as witnessed by the establishment of the Political Dialogue Mechanism, of which we also celebrated the first session”, commented the Undersecretary. “In both San Pedro Sula and Roatan, a strong interest emerged from the Honduran business system for greater synergies with our country in the areas of infrastructure, agriculture, tourism, and textiles, which we will explore with the aim of translating these expectations into practice”.
