Deputy Foreign Minister Cirielli today welcomed the Deputy Minister of Foreign Affairs of Turkmenistan, Ahmet Gurbanov, in Rome. Building on the recent Italy–Central Asia Ministerial Conference, the two Deputy Ministers explored bilateral relations and opportunities for collaboration in strategic sectors such as energy, water resources, defence supplies, and cultural and inter-university cooperation.
The Central Asian country, ranked fourth in the world for natural gas reserves, was already the destination of a visit by Deputy Minister Cirielli in January 2025. On that occasion, he met with Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of Foreign Affairs Rashid Meredov, as well as Deputy Minister Gurbanov.
“Italy and Turkmenistan are friendly nations, bound by long-standing and profound ties. Italy, also within the framework of the European Union’s external relations, regards Turkmenistan as a key element of its strategy in Central Asia — a region increasingly strategic as a bridge between Europe and Asia,” emphasised Deputy Minister Cirielli.
