Tajani begins official visit to Mexico City today

The Italian Minister of Foreign Affairs and International Cooperation, Antonio Tajani, begins his official visit to Mexico City today — the first visit to the country by an Italian Foreign Minister in ten years. A packed schedule of institutional meetings and engagements is planned. The aim of the mission is to strengthen political and economic ties with a key partner in Latin America — a priority region in Italy’s foreign policy agenda.

Today, Minister Tajani will inaugurate the Italy-Mexico Business Forum together with Mexico’s Minister of the Economy, Marcelo Ebrard. Mexico is one of the priority countries under Italy’s Export Action Plan and represents the leading market in the region for Italian products. During the mission, the Embassy will present the “Growth Guide”, designed to support Italian companies entering the local market. On this occasion, technical agreements will be signed between Italy’s main export support agencies and their Mexican counterparts (SACE-COMCE, CDP-COMCE, Italian Chamber of Commerce in Mexico, Mexican Chamber of Commerce in Italy and COMCE, SACE-Banco Santander).

This will be followed by sector-specific roundtables to explore opportunities for business cooperation in the automotive, machinery, green economy, and physical and digital infrastructure sectors.

In the afternoon (local time), Tajani will also take part in an event dedicated to combating the illicit trafficking of cultural heritage. This is a sector in which Italy and Mexico have built a growing and fruitful collaboration: the efforts of the Carabinieri have led to the return of over 1,000 archaeological artefacts illegally exported to Italy.

In the following days, the Minister will meet with the Foreign Minister, the Minister of the Interior, the Minister for Security, and the Minister of Tourism.

The mission also coincides with the anniversary of the Capaci massacre, and will serve as an opportunity to remember Giovanni Falcone and to reaffirm the shared commitment to the fight against organised crime.
