In view of the next steps in the trade negotiations with the United States in Brussels, Foreign Minister Antonio Tajani held telephone calls this morning with EU Trade Commissioner Maros Sefcovic and Spanish Economy Minister Carlos Cuerpo Caballero.
The Minister agreed with his counterparts that no needless aggressive rhetoric against the US Administration should be fuelled, but that all the negotiating steps already prepared by the Commission should be followed. He confirmed his appreciation for the stance taken by the Commission in recent hours in response to President Trump’s letter to the EU. Minister Tajani emphasized the need to “negotiate with our heads held high,” attempting to interpret the US negotiating moves firmly but intelligently. Minister Tajani also informed his counterparts that, starting tomorrow, he would be in Washington for a mission to meet with Secretary of State Marco Rubio and other members of the US Administration and Congress.
