The Undersecretary of State for Foreign Affairs and International Cooperation, Giorgio Silli, took part today in the First National Conference on “The Arctic: Defence and the National System in the New Challenges of Global Competition”, organised by Undersecretary of State for Defence Isabella Rauti at the Centre for Higher Defence Studies (Centro Alti Studi Difesa) in Rome.
In his remarks, Undersecretary Silli noted that the update of Italy’s Arctic policy is nearing completion through the preparation of a new strategic document to replace the one adopted in 2015. The document represents a collective endeavour, the result of close cooperation among ministries, research bodies and institutions, aimed at providing an integrated, forward-looking vision that builds on Italy’s long-standing scientific and historical experience while addressing new international challenges.
“Italy’s approach to the Arctic,” Undersecretary Silli stated, “is grounded in key principles: respect for the sovereignty of Arctic States and for international and maritime law; protection of indigenous peoples; safeguarding of biodiversity and ecosystems; promotion of scientific cooperation as an instrument of peace and diplomacy; and support for economic and entrepreneurial interests within a framework of sustainability”.
