The Minister of Foreign Affairs, Antonio Tajani, represented Italy on behalf of the Italian Government at the Belém Climate Summit, convened by Brazilian President Ignacio Lula, just days before the inauguration of COP30.

At the Summit, Italy reaffirmed its firm commitment to doing its part to limit global warming, urging all participating States to combine ambition with realism, to pursue climate goals with openness and innovation, and to avoid dogmatism. Italy also contributed to the important achievement of the European Union Environment Ministers, who confirmed the climate target of reducing greenhouse gas emissions by 66-72% by 2035 compared to 1990 levels.

This year, COP30 in Belém commemorates the 10th anniversary of the Paris Agreement and, eighty years after the establishment of the United Nations, it is the main international forum for addressing the challenges posed by climate change. The Summit, chaired by Brazil, symbolically chose to host the event in the capital of the state of Pará, known as the “Gateway to the Amazon.”

During his visit to Belém, Minister Tajani visited the Italian Pavilion with the innovative floating platform “AquaPraça by BF International,” designed by Carlo Ratti Associati and already presented at the Venice Biennale last September, which was included among the official exhibition spaces of COP30. On stage, Minister Tajani met with a group of Italian entrepreneurs operating in Brazil, a country included in the Foreign Ministry’s Export Action Plan.

During his mission to Belém, the Minister also visited the Basilica of Our Lady of Nazaré, designed in the early 20th century by Italian architect Gino Coppedè. He also visited the “Fazenda da Esperança” therapeutic community and the Divine Providence Hospital in Marituba, on the outskirts of the city, where Italian missionaries from the Congregation of the Poor Servants of Divine Providence – Don Calabria Institute operate.
