Undersecretary Tripodi in Shanghai inaugurates Italian Pavilion at the China International Import Expo

Undersecretary of State for Foreign Affairs and International Cooperation, Maria Tripodi, today attended the China International Import Expo in Shanghai—the leading trade fair for imports into China—on behalf of Minister Antonio Tajani. Now in its eighth edition, the event attracts thousands of exhibitors from over 150 countries each year, offering them a platform to introduce new products, technologies, and services to the Chinese market.

During the inauguration of the Italian Pavilion, the Undersecretary emphasised that, thanks to the Export Action Plan launched by Minister Tajani, the Italian Government is at the forefront of supporting domestic businesses abroad and fostering the growth of the national economy.

Italy closed 2024 as the world’s 6th largest exporter, with exports worth EUR 623.5 billion. It also ranked as the 2nd most diversified economy globally, and the leading economy in Europe in terms of product variety. These trends have continued into 2025: in the first eight months alone, Italy exported goods worth EUR 423 billion, marking a 2.6% increase compared with the same period in 2024.

In this context, relations with Beijing—Italy’s 11th largest export market—are of considerable strategic importance. “The growth opportunities in a rapidly expanding and highly potential market such as China are significant,” the Undersecretary concluded. “Institutions and businesses must work together to seize them fully.” She highlighted that the fashion, goldsmithing, jewellery, and luxury goods sectors are particularly appreciated in China, as shown by the strong public turnout at the luxury exhibitions within the Italian Pavilion, organised by the Ministry of Foreign Affairs in collaboration with Italian Trade Agency and inspired by Rome’s Palazzo della Civiltà Italiana.

On the sidelines of the Expo, the Undersecretary also met a delegation of the Italian business community operating in China.
