The first flight, with 25 tons of humanitarian aid, arrived today, December 25. The shipment will serve 2,500 children from displaced families attending schools run by the Parish of Port Sudan. This marks the launch of the “Italy for Sudan” initiative.
The assistance program – launched by Foreign Minister Antonio Tajani – is part of a broader and more structured intervention, which plans to deliver additional aid by sea next year to the 53 camps for displaced people in the city and surrounding areas, which are estimated to house over 20,000 people.
The humanitarian flight – which left yesterday from Rome Fiumicino with logistical support from the United Nations Humanitarian Response Base in Brindisi – contains approximately 25 tons of aid, divided among 32 pallets of food, including pasta, flour, sugar, powdered milk, legumes, and a pallet of sports equipment (uniforms and balls). The shipment is primarily intended for children from refugee communities in Port Sudan and their families. Pancrazio, Nobile, Sieralat, Ventigrani, Solania, Piccolo, Mulino Caputo, Rummo, La Torrente, Petti, Di Martino, and the FIGC (Italian Football Federation) contributed to the shipment .
The Italian Ambassador to Khartoum, Michele Tommasi, and the Counsellor of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs and International Cooperation (MAECI), Monsignor Marco Malizia, welcomed the flight in Port Sudan.
The initiative is consistent with and complements Italy’s humanitarian commitment to Sudan, which has been ongoing since the conflict began just under three years ago.
This commitment has seen Italy maintain its ongoing intervention programs for the Sudanese population, without interruptions or reductions, for a total value of approximately €125 million, hinged around three strategic pillars: Health and food security; Agriculture and the fight against poverty; Social protection and inclusion.
