Commemoration of Ambassador Luca Attanasio, Carabiniere Scelto Vittorio Iacovacci and driver Mustapha Milambo on the fifth anniversary of their death

February 22 marked the fifth anniversary of the tragic death of Ambassador Luca Attanasio, Carabiniere Scelto Vittorio Iacovacci and driver Mustapha Milambo, who were killed in an attack in the Democratic Republic of Congo. During yesterday’s commemoration ceremony in Limbiate, Foreign Minister Antonio Tajani recalled in a message that Luca Attanasio was an extraordinary interpreter of the values of Italian diplomacy, always at the service of citizens, representing Italy with dedication around the world and carrying with him the identity and values of his community of origin.

This morning the Undersecretary for Foreign Affairs, Maria Tripodi, attended the memorial service at the Iacovacci family’ chapel and the inauguration of a monument dedicated to the Carabiniere in Latina, while all Ministry’s staff in Rome and abroad observed a minute’s silence in their memory.

Tomorrow, Tuesday 24 February, Minister Tajani and Carabinieri General Luongo, in the presence of Ambassador Attanasio’s family, the family of Carabiniere Scelto Iacovacci and the Foreign Ministry ‘s staff, will honour their memory in an official ceremony during which a commemorative plaque dedicated to those who died abroad will be unveiled.

Once again this year, scholarships will be awarded to students from Morocco, Nigeria and the Democratic Republic of Congo in memory of Luca Attanasio, Vittorio Iacovacci and Mustapha Milambo, reflecting Italy’s strong ties with Africa and its commitment to educating younger generations.

In memory of Luca Attanasio, Vittorio Iacovacci and Mustapha Milambo, the Ministry renews its commitment to upholding their example, in the spirit of service to the State, solidarity and the promotion of the values of peace and cooperation that guide Italy’s action around the world.
