The Flag-wavers Association of Arezzo will attend the Italian Festival in Cape Town, an annual event that promotes and celebrates Italian traditions, which will take place on 2 and 3 March. The Italian Cultural Institute of Cape Town, promoter of the initiative together with the Italian Consulate in Cape Town and the Idiom Wines association, announced the event. The Italian Festival at Idiom Wines will be an opportunity to connect Italy and South Africa even closer through a food and wine tour, mixing the best of the Italian wine tradition, street food, cooking masterclasses, musical events and entertainment.
Flag-wavers have been a pivotal figure in medieval military strategies for centuries. Using a precise code of flag-throwing and flag-waving, they communicated to their allies the most favourable moment for attack, the troop movements to be made and the decisive moments of the battle. As time passed, their role assumed an ever greater artistic importance, eventually becoming an integral part of folklore and popular entertainment.
Founded in 1960, the Flag-wavers Association of Arezzo is an independent organisation that has turned this art into its vocation, aiming to remain faithful to the military tradition without forgetting the artistic and choreographic aspects. By continuing their tradition, the Arezzo Flag-wavers engage in various cultural, recreational and folkloristic events in Italy and worldwide throughout the year. The Association currently consists of around 60 flag-wavers and 30 instruments, boasting more than 1,700 performances on stage.
