Bizet’s Carmen on stage in Tunis

George Bizet’s opera Carmen will be staged on 14 and 15 February at the Tunis Opera Theatre. The performance, danced, choreographed and directed by Sofien Abou Lagraa, will feature the Opera Ballet, the Tunisian Symphony Orchestra and the Tunis Opera choir, with 120 artists on stage and no less than 11 soloists. This production is the fruit of an ambitious cultural cooperation project between Italy, France and Tunisia.

The initiative is in fact the result of a series of creative residencies jointly organised by the French Institute of Tunisia and the Italian Cultural Institute of Tunis that allowed conductor Nicoletta Conti, costume designer Paola Lo Sciuto and six musicians from the Ente Luglio Musicale Trapanese to spend a period of time working and training alongside Tunisian artists.

“It is precisely in the training, sharing of knowledge and Italian savoir faire that lies – according to the director of the Italian Cultural Institute, Fabio Ruggirello – the outstanding feature of this project, which will be able to create specific skills and a strong added value in Tunisia”.

Nicoletta Conti is one of the most renowned conductors on the international scene, with a career spanning over thirty years and a number of awards, including the prestigious Minerva Award for Fine Art, under her belt. Paola Lo Sciuto is a visual artist with many facets, and is in Tunis in her capacity as costume designer. She studied under Emanuele Luzzati and was also assistant to the painter Mario Schifano. She works as a costume designer and is professor of the Costume for the Performing Arts course at the Academy of Fine Arts in Rome.
