The international project “Beyond Borders” – directed by Instabili Vaganti and supported by MiC, as part of the “Boarding Pass Plus 2022-24” program – opened its doors to the public at the end of a first stage in Tunis, which took place from 5 to 8 September 2024, presenting a first “work in progress” on 13 September at the Sala Bernard Turin of the Théâtre National Tunisienne.

The founders of the company – the director and actress Anna Dora Dorno, and the performer and playwright, Nicola Pianzola, assisted by two of the artists of the project, the dancer Camilla Paris, and the performer Mouayed El Ghazouani – have in fact held an intensive 4-day workshop with 12 Tunisian artists, including actors, performers and dancers, to select the team that will be involved in the co-production Frontières # Tunisie, a collaboration between Instabili Vaganti, Theatre National Tunisienne and the Italian Cultural Institute of Tunis, which will open in November 2024.

This first study is the result of a research process on the theme of “border”, developed by Instabili Vaganti together with the participants of the workshop, called to transpose their reflections on the proposed themes into stage actions.

The performers have delved into their own cultural and performing traditions, to understand the present and narrating – through gestures, actions, texts and songs – the limits they have had to overcome, the borders they have tried to cross to assert their identity, and the new challenges ahead of them.

A journey backwards on a circular line of time, which triggers a dance of distance, a call echoing like a song that comes from the other side of a border. Ritual steps, traditional songs and spiral-shaped actions move the performers’ bodies in space, triggering a dance in constant balance on those thin and invisible lines that separate us and that we call “borders”.
