On 19 November last, the exhibition “The Master of Light: Caravaggio and His Descendants” was inaugurated at the Hangaram Museum in Seoul. Open to the public until 30 March, the event, which has been produced by Korean partner Acts Management in collaboration with the cultural association Metamorfosi and supported by the Italian Cultural Institute of Seoul, under the patronage of the Italian Embassy, is culturally relevant for relations between Italy and South Korea.

For the first time in Korea, such a significant number of works by Caravaggio – including “Boy bitten by a lizard” – and the artists of the Caravaggio school are on public display.

Curated by Pierluigi Carofano, this exhibition invites visitors to simultaneously discover Caravaggio and the echo of his art through the “Caravaggisti”, i.e. artists who were inspired by the master’s revolutionary genius and furthered his innovative language. Among the works on display, audiences can admire the masterpieces of artists such as Orazio Gentileschi, Guercino, Annibale and Ludovico Carracci, Cavalier d’Arpino, Mattia Preti, Fede Galizia and many others, each bearing witness to the profound cultural and stylistic influence of Caravaggio.

The opening was attended by the Italian Ambassador, Emilia Gatto, the Director of the Italian Cultural Institute, Michela Linda Magrì, the President of Act Management, Minhee Kim, and the President of Metamorfosi, Pietro Folena.

On 18 and 19 December, there will also be two theatrical performances, with Italian actor Cesare Capitani playing Caravaggio, in which audiences will be able to relive the master’s story.
