The Directorate-General for Contemporary Creativity of the Italian Ministry of Culture and the MUFOCO – Museum of Contemporary Photography, in collaboration with the Italian Cultural Institute of London and the Archivio Eredi di Luigi Ghirri, present the exhibition “Viaggio in Italia”, curated by Matteo Balduzzi. The exhibition is hosted at the Italian Cultural Institute of London and will run until 28 March.

The exhibition celebrates the 40th anniversary of “Viaggio in Italia”, the photographic project conceived by Luigi Ghirri in 1984, considered a milestone in the history of contemporary Italian photography. It showcases the 86 images featured in the original catalogue, which has been reprinted as an anastatic copy edition for this special occasion.

A key element of the anniversary celebrations is the anastatic reprint of the original catalogue “Viaggio in Italia” (Il Quadrante, Alessandria 1984), curated by Luigi Ghirri, Gianni Leone, and Enzo Velati, designed by Ghirri’s wife Paola Borgonzoni, and featuring an essay by Arturo Carlo Quintavalle and a text by Gianni Celati. This publication is considered one of the most significant works in both contemporary photography and the field of artist books, now a rare and collectible item.

The volume, which originally contained a selection of 86 photographs from the over 300 displayed in the historic exhibition, has been reissued in a facsimile edition by Quodlibet publishing house, under the supervision of the Directorate-General for Contemporary Creativity and the Museum of Contemporary Photography, in collaboration with the Archivio Eredi di Luigi Ghirri.
