The Kyoto Prefecture, The Museum of Kyoto, The Mainichi Newspapers, MBS Mainichi Broadcasting System, and the National Gallery of Scotland, in collaboration with the Italian Cultural Institute of Osaka, present Canaletto and the Splendour of Venice—the most comprehensive exhibition ever held in Japan on the Venetian painter. The exhibition will be open to visitors until 13 April. Francesca Tasso, Director of the Museums of Castello Sforzesco in Milan, will introduce a Canaletto masterpiece loaned for this exhibition.

The exhibition features around 60 works, including oil paintings, drawings, and engravings, mainly from British collections such as the National Gallery of Scotland. Canaletto’s works are displayed alongside paintings by earlier, contemporary, and later artists, offering a rare showcase of Vedutismo—a genre seldom exhibited in Japan.

As a special side event, on 15 March, the Italian Cultural Institute of Osaka will screen Molecole, a film by Andrea Segre shot in Venice in 2020 during the lockdown, providing a unique and unprecedented perspective on the city. The screening will be followed by an after-talk with Andrea Raos, Director of the Italian Cultural Institute of Osaka.
