As part of the 2025 edition of Fare Cinema, the film festival curated and promoted by the Italian Ministry of Foreign Affairs and International Cooperation and its diplomatic network abroad, the Italian Cultural Institute of San Francisco organised two evenings dedicated to showcasing Italian culture through documentary film, spanning music and literature. Both events featured director Alessandro Melazzini, an eclectic voice in contemporary documentary filmmaking, known for his ability to portray a lesser-known yet deeply fascinating Italy to international audiences.
On 10 June, the Institute hosted a screening of “Italo Svevo. Writing Hidden in Trieste”, an elegant and insightful portrait of the Triestine author, one of the most cherished figures in Italian literature. The documentary explores the complexity of Svevo’s personality and the striking modernity of the themes in his writing, intertwined with the allure of Trieste at the time.
A second screening took place on 12 June, featuring the documentary “Italo Disco”—a nostalgic and informative exploration of a musical genre that is often referenced but seldom examined in depth. Both screenings concluded with a Q&A session with director Melazzini. The Italo Disco event was followed by a musical after-event featuring a DJ set curated by Nino Musco.
