Elena Fontanella, newly appointed and highly esteemed Director of the Italian Cultural Institute in Madrid, aims to strengthen the Italian cultural presence throughout western Spain by promoting decentralised activities, teaser events for major Italian initiatives, and joint projects with the various Italian institutions operating in Spain.

A strong identity, hospitality, appeal, and the promotion of the Italian language are the guiding principles that Elena Fontanella intends to prioritise from the outset of her leadership at the Italian Cultural Institute of Madrid. Among her strategic objectives is the establishment of a Board of Donors dedicated to Italian companies operating in Spain, as well as the launch of the “Palazzo Italia Club”, designed for professionals, cultural operators, and stakeholders of the Made in Italy brand.

A journalist, essayist, curator, and university lecturer, Elena Fontanella brings with her a solid background in cultural diplomacy, heritage enhancement, and international project development. She collaborated with the Ministry of Culture until 2024, delivering internationally focused projects and chairing various National Commemoration Committees. Her most recent role was that of Cultural Adviser to the former Undersecretary for Publishing and Communication at the Presidency of the Council of Ministers – now Vice President of the Chamber of Deputies – Giorgio Mulè.
