The Italian Cultural Institute of Edinburgh is hosting the exhibition “Giacomo Matteotti and the liberating freedom”, organised in collaboration with ASMI, the Association for the Study of Modern Italy, the Filippo Turati Foundation for Historical Studies, and the National Committee for the Centenary Celebrations of Giacomo Matteotti’s Death. Since 2024, initiatives have continued to commemorate Giacomo Matteotti, who was kidnapped and assassinated by a Fascist squad on 10 June 1924 – an event that marked a turning point in Italy’s history and still resonates with the Italian conscience today.

The exhibition offers an original reinterpretation of Matteotti’s life and political activity, providing a discreet yet effective insight into his private life. At the heart of the exhibition is a reconstruction of his political work and his influential parliamentary career.

In addition to documenting the tragic conclusion of Matteotti’s experience, the exhibition also reflects on how his life and work were perceived abroad at the time, as well as on his contemporary legacy.
