The Italian Cultural Institute of Stuttgart is currently hosting the exhibition “Brutalist Italy”, presenting a curated selection of photographs by Roberto Conte and Stefano Perego, drawn from their 2023 volume “Brutalist Italy. Concrete Architecture from the Alps to the Mediterranean Sea” (Fuel, London).
Both photographers, born and raised in the area surrounding Milan, undertook a photographic journey of over 20,000 kilometres across the peninsula, documenting the extraordinary stylistic diversity of Italian Brutalist architecture beyond its unifying hallmark — exposed reinforced concrete as the material of choice.
The project features over one hundred buildings and offers a glimpse into an architectural Italy far removed from the Renaissance and Baroque aesthetics with which the country is traditionally associated, particularly in the imagination of international audiences.
