Global Compact on Migration: the Farnesina meets the Italian civil society

Representatives of the Italian civil society and NGOs working on migration issues met today at the Farnesina to talk for the first time about negotiations on the Global Compact on Migration that are underway in the UN. During the meeting, they discussed the key points of the Italian proposal for a global agreement to manage migration flows. These key points are: shared responsibility of migration between countries of origin, transit and destination; international solidarity; a strong link between development and migration policies; and protection of human rights and the most vulnerable segments of the population, especially underage children. The meeting saw the participation of the representatives of countries that share Italy’s goals (Argentina, Bangladesh, Bulgaria, Canada, Germany, Morocco, Mexico, Switzerland), representatives of the EU Commission, the International Organization for Migration, and the FAO. It is a wide “coalition” that aims to support the Global Compact process with a view to the success of the negotiations by the end of 2018.
