A contemporary African art exhibition “African Metropolis. An Imaginary City” opens at the MAXXI Museum in Rome on 21 June 2018.
Organised in association with the Ministry of Foreign Affairs and International Cooperation, the exhibition is being put on by internationally renowned curators and includes 100 works by 34 artists. The exhibition takes an innovative approach to the idea of modern-day cities, displaying a current map of the continent that includes both challenges and opportunities. The project was inspired by the wish to give a complete overview of the transformation taking place on the African continent. It uses the power of figurative art to express the role of culture in bringing the people of the two continents closer together, acting as an instrument to promote peace as well as to be a driving force for social and economic development.
Having hosted an international conference devoted to the issue of urbanisation in Africa and relative implications in terms of economic and social development and migration last November, the Ministry of Foreign Affairs and International Cooperation helped put on the MAXXI project, believing in the value of culture as an instrument of dialogue with a continent firmly bound to Europe.
