VM Del Re. Italy supports access to vaccine for less developed countries

Vice Minister Emanuela Del Re had an interview in VTC with the UN Sub-Secretary General and High Representative for Least Developed Countries, Landlocked Developing Countries and Small Island Developing States, Fekitamoeloa Utoikamanu.

“Italy is a traditional friend and long-standing supporter of UN action in defence of vulnerable countries” –  the Vice Minister recalled to her interlocutor – “Italian development cooperation is particularly focused on the least developed countries that represent the largest number of our priority and intervention countries”.

“Italy will hold the Presidency of the G20 in 2021, and will give priority to health, social and economic issues related to the consequences of COVID pandemic.  In this context, space may be given to specific initiatives to strengthen the functioning and resilience of health services, including in developing island states” – she continued.

“Italy has also supported access to the international mechanism for the universal and equitable distribution of vaccines, allowing all least developed countries and small developing islands to be among the 92 beneficiaries of the GAVI AMC/Covax Facility. We have also encouraged their full participation in the ACT Facilitation Council”. – VM Del Re concluded.
