The conference “OSCE and the new context for regional cooperation in the Mediterranean” will be held at the foreign ministry in Rome on Monday 28 May 2012 at 10.00. The opening speech will be delivered by Minister for Foreign Affairs Giulio Terzi.
Participants will include OSCE Secretary General Ambassador Lamberto Zannier and Vice President of the OSCE Parliamentary Assembly the Hon. Riccardo Migliori.
Also present will be representatives of European and Mediterranean institutions (SEAE, Union for the Mediterranean, Union for the Maghreb) and a selection of esteemed experts from the various US, European and Mediterranean and Middle Eastern think-tanks, including those of the Gulf countries and Turkey.
The conference, organised by IPALMO and the International Affairs Institute (IAI), in close collaboration with the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, aims to launch a reflection on the effectiveness of multilateral cooperation mechanisms in the Mediterranean, as well as on a possible evolution that would allow for a leap of quality in intra-regional and inter-regional cooperation.
In that context, the role of the Helsinki Process and of OSCE in the democratisation of the countries of Eastern Europe, on the basis of which a project for a Conference on Security and Cooperation in the Mediterranean was conceived in the past, could provide a useful model.
Special attention will also be given to OSCE’s Mediterranean dimension and the collaboration it has enjoyed since 1995 with Algeria, Egypt, Jordan, Israel, Morocco and Tunisia.
