On Wednesday 18 March at 15:00, the Farnesina will host the event “Sustainable soil management, reducing global threats, protecting local resources”. Introductions will be delivered by Director General for Development Cooperation Giampaolo Cantini of the Ministry of Forieng Affairs and International Cooperation (MFAIC), and Director General for Sustainable Development, Environmental Damage and Relations with the EU and International Organisations of the Ministry of the Environment (MATTM) Francesco La Camera.
Also speaking will be Executive Secretary of the UN Convention on Combating Desertification Monique Barbut, who will publicly launch in Italy — a country that has become the destination of an increasing number of migrants —a new operational approach. Soil deterioration is not merely a wound to the ecosystem, but also the cause of poverty, insecurity and escape to better places; restoring the territory would be a way of combating climate change, conserving fertility and traditional opportunities for income and stabilising fragile societies.
The UNCCD is the main UN instrument for combating desertification and other forms of erosion and drought. Italy plays an active two-fold role as a donor and, at the same time, a victim of desertification.
