Infinite Mediterranean: Bennato, Leopardi and the Zabbaleen
The Cairo Italian Cultural Institute will hold a series of poetry and musical events in a “Mediterranean Weekend” (17-19 March), part of the “Italy, Cultures, the Mediterranean” programme. The event will include poetry contests and the Egyptian leg of Eugenio Bennato’s Mediterranean tour.
“The Infinite” by Giacomo Leopardi will be presented in Cairo on 17, 18, and 19 March in a highly evocative poetry programme organised with the Cervantes Institute. Italian poet, Davide Rondoni, and Spanish poet, Violeta Medina, will converse with Egyptian poets and people who are simply interested in a kind of “Poetry Contest”. It will be held in Moqattam, a suburb of Cairo where the “APE” social project is being developed to highlight the “Zabbaleen”, a group of historic garbage collectors.
“Infinito Mediterraneo”, an art and poetry book featuring the works of female poets Laura Pugno, Violetta Medina and Asmaa Gamal will also be presented as part of the event. The book is made of recycled paper thanks to an environmentally-friendly reuse of waste materials by the women of the Moqattam community, a seed of hope and an ethical contribution by the Italian sustainability system.
A delegation of authorities from the Marche Region will go to Cairo, led by Professor Massimo Ciambotti, President of CIAS/CESMA (Marche Region Study Centre), along with Ms Pina Gentili, CIAS/CESMA manager, and chef Luca Facchini, member of the well-known Fermo-based gastronomic review “Tipicita”. The idea is to establish links with the University of Luxor, also in view of the upcoming Week of Italian Cuisine to be held next November.
On 18 March, the Cairo Opera House open-air theatre will host a concert by Eugenio Bennato, featuring a musical mix comprising instruments, tones and voices from various parts of the Southern hemisphere. The concert will conclude Bennato’s “DA CHE SUD E’ SUD” tour after stops in Tunisia, Algeria and Morocco.
