Italian Consulate General in Montreal celebrates the 2018 Italian National Day

Nearly ten thousand guests attended the celebrations of the 2018 Italian National Day yesterday at the Place Bell in Laval. Held ahead of the official date because of logistic reasons, the event was organized by the of Italian Consulate General in Montreal, in partnership with the Italian Cultural Institute, and the Italian Chamber of Commerce in Canada.

The celebration had a two-fold goal: to be an inclusive and open event catering to a large audience and addressed to Italians and Canadians who are friends and enthusiasts of Italy, and to be an unprecedented platform from which to promote Italian products to a very large audience in a single day. The event was sponsored by many prominent Italian food, wine, luxury and design brands. A reception was offered to thousands of guests exclusively featuring Italian products, which are becoming increasingly popular in Canada. Italy recorded a 23% rise in wine and food exports to Canada in the first two months of 2018, with Quebec being its largest market in many sectors.

The celebration, which is part of the #vivereall’italiana programme, culminated with the extraordinary concert by Claudio Baglioni, his first to celebrate the Italian National Day, which was offered to all the guests. He was preceded on stage by musical artists of the Italian community in Montreal – one of the largest in the world. Established Italian talents, who have become successful in Montreal in fields such as AI and virtual reality, in which the Canadian metropolis is a world leader, attended the event and interacted with Italian Parlamentarians elected in North America, Senator Francesca Alderisi and MP La Marca, on the future of Italian communities abroad. The Italian Consul General, Marco Riccardo Rusconi, the Italian Ambassador to Canada, Claudio Taffuri, and the Prime Minister of Quebec, Philippe Couillard, addressed the audience to jointly highlight the excellent relations between Italy and Quebec.
